Elephant kills old woman, then returns to trample her corpse at the funeral

It's no secret that elephants are among the most expressive and emotional animals on the planet, with there being plenty of evidence of these creatures exhibiting happiness, sadness, anger, compassion, and love, even.

But what about murderous intent and vengeance?

As it turns out, one particular elephant in India was capable of all that and more, when it killed a 70-year-old woman and then went back for seconds during her funeral.

On June 10, 2022, the woman named Maya Murmu, who hailed from Raipal village in the district of Odisha Mayurbhanj, was brutally attacked by an elephant in a nearby forest while collecting water.

According to news reports, she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead very quickly after.

After bringing her body home, her family proceeded to make the necessary arrangements for her funeral, but it was all for nought as on the day of her funeral, the very same elephant returned to the village in an extremely foul mood.

Incredibly, the elephant then proceeded to attack the funeral and targeted Maya's corpse, trampling it furiously before letting out a roar that signalled other elephants from its herd to wreck the rest of the village. The same elephant also somehow managed to identify Maya's home, and went on smash it, killing the goats living there.

By the end, nearly the entire village had been wrecked, and many of the inhabitants had lost their homes (although thankfully, no one else was hurt).

But the most disconcerting thing was how that one elephant had managed to keep an eye out for Maya's corpse throughout all of the mayhem, with some villagers even saying that they saw it still attacking her body even after they'd returned to survey the damage.

Supposedly, the Odisha area bears witness to many elephant attacks due to its proximity with forests, although this particular incident is one that's particularly strange due to the elephant's obsession with a single individual.

While the exact reason for the elephant's vengeful behavior remains unknown, some have speculated that the woman may have done something in the past to offend the beast, and that it managed to retain the thought in its head until the opportunity arose for it to seek revenge.

This is also quite probably considering that elephants have extremely long memories, and are known to exact vengeance on humans or other animals that have caused them hurt, most notably poachers.

Some scientists have even noted that wild elephants may even grow to learn about these behaviors from perpetrators and begin hating them. So it's safe to say, that you really should play nice with elephants if you ever encounter them in the wild.
